Artillery Depot (Camp Barry) Near Washington, D.C. (U.S. Civil War) Camp Barry, also known as the Artillery Depot, was a significant military installation established during the U.S. Civil War. Located near Washington, D.C., it served as a training ground and supply center for the Union Army's artillery units. The camp was named after Brigadier General Montgomery C. Meigs, who also happened to be the Quartermaster General of the United States Army during the war. Camp Barry played a crucial role in the defense strategy of Washington, D.C., and its operation lasted from August 1861 until the end of the Civil War in 1865. The site where Camp Barry was located is now part of the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center campus.
